2012-2013 Cohort
Adriana Sanchez
Hello, my name is Adriana Sanchez and I recently transferred to Santa Clara University. I graduated from Foothill College with an associate’s degree in Sociology and am now working towards a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology with a minor in Spanish. In the future, I hope to work for a non-profit organization and help others in need. I am thankful for the opportunity to be part of Elevate Tutoring because I want to make a difference in students’ lives. I know how it feels to struggle in school and to be in need of support – especially being part of the minority. I would have appreciated a program like this when I was in high school because I was one of those students who would struggle in school but was not able to afford a tutor. Not only will this program help other students academically but it will also help me finish paying for this school year. Unfortunately, this past year I faced many struggles such as losing my grandfather causing my parents and siblings to move to Mexico. I stayed behind to finish school. Not having my family with me has not only hurt me emotionally, but also financially. By not having my parents financial support, not only do I have to worry about paying my school tuition (which is $40,000), but I also have to pay for rent and bills. As I mentioned before, I am happy for this wonderful opportunity that will help me worry less about my financial situation and I can’t wait to see what the future holds for this program.
Andrea Trevino
Hello, my name is Andrea, and I’m a recent transfer student at San Jose State University. I graduated from the Community College of San Mateo this last spring with an Associate’s Degree in Social Science, but am now working on a Bachelor’s Degree in Hospitality and Tourism Management and hoping to also minor in Public Relations. I’m excited to have been blessed with the chance to be part of the Elevate Tutoring team this year and am looking forward to help strengthen the business and watch it flourish before my eyes. Although I have been lucky enough to obtain a few scholarships that have helped pay for part of my education, it has been a struggle doing it all on my own with only emotional support from my family. This opportunity couldn’t have come at a better time, I’m hungry for an education and it’s a huge stress off some shoulders knowing that I will be able to afford at least another semester. I’m looking forward to becoming the independent woman I’m striving to be in the next two years and making the best out of this opportunity.
Claudio Rivas
Hello, my name is Claudio Rivas and I am currently attending San Jose City College. I want to transfer to a four-year college after two years and pursue my goal of Electrical Engineering. I really love and enjoy math and science. I’ve also always enjoyed tutoring and helping out my peers and that’s why I am really happy to be part of Elevate Tutoring because I want to help students that want to succeed in their education accomplish this. I’m really looking forward to a great experience with a great team.
Javier Guzman
Hi my name is Javier Guzman, I am currently a freshman at San Jose State University and my major is Criminal Justice. Elevate Tutoring will help me reach my academic goals because I will be able to test my academic abilities by helping others, I will be able to go over the material that I already learned in order to be able to teach it to other students who need help and are struggling with it. I will be able to use my knowledge to benefit other students. Elevate Tutoring will also help me reach my personal goals because it will provide me with a scholarship that will be crucial to completing my education. This is really important to me because I come from a low income family and this will make it easier for me to pay for my education. It will also help me because I will be able to tutor other students one on one by the end of the program.
Mayra Salvador
My name is Mayra Salvador and I am a current student at Santa Clara University working towards a Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology and a minor in Environmental Studies. Before transferring to SCU, I was a student at Evergreen Valley College where I graduated last May with two Associate’s Degrees: Associate of Arts and General Studies: Sociology. Growing up, my parents always reminded me that getting an education was important; however, due to the language barrier and their busy work schedules, they were not able to help me with my homework nor get me a tutor. Fortunately, despite the obstacles I have faced, I have been able to thrive in my education. Due to my hard work, I have been blessed with scholarships and programs like Elevate Tutoring that provide economic support and give me one less thing to worry about so that I can just focus on my education. Through Elevate Tutoring, I seek to support students who, like me, are not able to afford a tutor. My goal is to assist students with their work so they can also have one less thing to worry about and focus on finishing their education. Overall, I am excited that through this program I will be able to do what I love the most: work with youth and teach math.
Patty Medina
Bonjour, my name is Patty Medina. I am a junior at Santa Clara University. I am a double major in Sociology and French and I am double minor in Public Health and Anthropology. I am very grateful for having been selected to be a part of Elevate Tutoring because it is such a privilege to be working for an amazing program that offers tutoring services to students in under-resourced communities. I feel that the program can help me gain the skills needed to become a better tutor and improve my public speaking skills, while ultimately giving back to my community. In addition, I hope to apply what I learn in the program so I can help students succeed and be confident in math. With the scholarship, I plan to further my education as I pay for my tuition and other school expenses, like books. Thus, with the financial pressure off my shoulders, I hope to work towards accomplishing my other goals in life which include being a doctor and a teacher in other parts of the world.
Salvador Navarro
My name is Salvador Navarro and I am from Oakland, California. I am a Junior at San Jose State majoring in Civil Engineering and am considering a minor in Astronomy. After SJSU, I hope to pursue a Master’s Degree either at UC Berkeley or Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and eventually specialize in structure and construction, but have also considered transportation and earthquake. I love watching, talking about and playing sports, primarily football, baseball, and basketball. I’m extremely passionate about my my sports teams and I translate that passion to every aspect of my life. I hope that Elevate Tutoring will be another impact on my life that will help me continue to grow and improve as a person. I’m excited to see how this program progresses and what the rest of my life has in store for me.
Xitlalic Soto
Hi! My name is Xitlalic and I am currently a freshmen studying Bioengineering at Santa Clara University. I love math and science and I wish everyone was as excited about learning as I am. For this reason, I was very motivated to apply to become a part of Elevate Tutoring and hopefully help some younger students find the joy that I find from learning. I believe that an education is not something that should be taken for granted, rather it should be appreciated and used to its fullest. Thanks to Elevate Tutoring, neither I nor my parents will have to stress out so much about how to pay for my education this year and I will be able to continue my studies. I am thrilled to be part of the team and look forward to everything this opportunity may bring.
